Audio Sample Retrieval: 1980s University Archive - Leap Wavelength
The shadows of old poplars wavered on the water like a crowd of drowning souls. An app on my phone ran automatically, translating every layer of that couple’s voiceprints into sets of code, stored in a digital cesspool in the cloud.
As the light faded, the woman began to sway her hips, looking more and more like the Grandma Yang of my childhood. The tremors from her lips aligned with precision to the moans of that old whore as she gripped my lower body all those years ago.
A flock of crows flew over, cawing back and forth, greeting my past life like the casual banter of the Mafia. One crow dived, dropping a five-centimeter black hairpin at my feet. The sound of that object bouncing on the stone slab was like an electrified needle, instantly flaying open a long-sealed audio sample: the wavelength curve of a college lover’s pelvis during the interlude of a leap.
I sat in the Lexus, clutching the hairpin. The driver kept his eyes straight ahead; the car's perfect insulation made his breathing sound as steady as the engine.
"To Renmin University.”
To find a shadow of her from forty years ago.
