TRANSACTION: 50 RMB (The Bribe of Mediocrity)
A low, guttural roar: “What are you doing?!” A shadow flickered—a man with a red armband.
My vision went stark white.
"Free love! None of your business!" Miao Ping snapped.
"No hooliganism. Show me your IDs!" The man barked from the shadows.
Miao Ping’s fingers trembled. She didn't know I had gone momentarily blind, nor did she know the depth of my guilt.
I was terrified. If exposed, my family, my career, and my hard-won mediocrity would vanish. My mind was flooded with the image of moral guardians who force others to "describe the details" of their private lives—revealing nothing but a voyeur’s lust.
My vision began to return. I pulled fifty yuan from my pocket—ten days' salary—and shoved it toward the shadow.
"Brother, go buy some liquor.”
It was the only bribe I would ever pay.
We escaped the trap.
